I enjoyed Jin’s retelling of childhood memories. I would particularly praise the emotional aspect of the story. Jin must embrace this fighting style, but his uncle Shimura is determined to redirect him towards the path of a true warrior. She reveals to him that the Mongols kill captive civilians every time the samurai directly challenge them to combat, so the only way to save civilians is for Jin to eliminate the Mongols stealthily – quietly, without raising the alarm to go against the samurai code and take out opponents from behind. The protagonist, Jin Sakai, grasps this with much explanation from the thief Yuna. Their strategy works, forcing the samurai to adapt if they want to save their island. These targeted methods posed a problem for the samurai because the Mongols fought unfairly or cowardly. The Mongols are led by Khotun Khan, who has a unique plan for the samurai (a rhyming haiku) and comes to their territory with well-thought-out conquest methods. You see, the story begins with the Mongol invasion of Tsushima. ![]() The samurai code of the main character, Jin Sakai, comes under scrutiny here, and that’s why the player must understand the samurai doctrine fully. If you want a more carefree samurai game, check out our review of Sushi Striker: The Way of Sushido. When I encountered haiku writing in Tsushima, I knew players were offered a samurai experience beyond merely wielding a katana. Just as the Witchers aren’t ordinary mercenaries but possess knowledge of alchemy, curse removal, and more, samurai were not just warriors who cut down their foes they were accomplished scholars of literature, meditation, and spirituality. But here’s the thing – if the whole game were just such action, it wouldn’t wholly portray a samurai’s life. A grand battle, a 3D sound that sends shivers down your spine, Hollywood-worthy music, and bloody action on Komoda Beach. Ghost of Tsushima has a phenomenal introduction, just as you’d expect from a samurai adventure. Sometimes, you end up with a clumsy haiku, but the verses become meaningful other times.Īt that moment, I received confirmation that I would enjoy this game. Haiku in Tsushima is written by selecting from three options for each of the three lines. The game dictated it to me, as I needed to compose a haiku precisely on that theme.
